The English course in Medicine aims at enabling the students to read medical texts in English.

The first-year course is a medical English course of B2 level (for reading). It consists of 12 classes of 2 hours taught to groups of about 30 students.

As the main purpose of the course is to develop a KNOW-HOW, the students are encouraged to do reading comprehension exercises each week. This enables them to progressively acquire the basic medical vocabulary and improve their reading skill.

Homework assignments are increasingly difficult to reach the level of the final exam. So, the students can assess the progress they are making in the accurate reading of medical English texts.

The "démarche scientifique" is a tool allowing the description and the understanding of the reality. It consists in making emerge observable or quantifiable elements, to confront them with assumptions, to be able to control the steps to reproduce and discuss results.

The French part of this teaching is specific to the scientific speech and to the basic techniques essential for medicine students.

The course mainly aims at developing the global and selective reading comprehension of scientific documents (as well as listening comprehension to a lesser extent).

It starts from simple reviews for the general public and gradually progresses to genuine articles from renowned medical journals (e.g. the British Medical Journal).

Acquired skills should allow students to access specific scientific literature easily and efficiently.

Démarche scientifique: to train students to observe, to communicate, to interpret and to discuss scientific results.

French: to sensitize the students with the problems related to the structure (for example logical articulation), with the lexicon (scientific vocabulary) and the standards writing necessary to intelligence, but also with the drafting of a scientific text.

The Med Eng 1course has a B2 level for reading, which means that the students are expected to already have a basic grounding in English grammar and vocabulary. It takes place in the second semester.


A compulsory placement test is held in September to identify the students who are too weak to follow the Med Eng 1course. They are given a 20-hour remedial course (aiming at revising the basics of the English language necessary for scientific text reading) in the first semester.

Démarche scientifique: none

French: a preliminary control of the native langage, level reached at the end of the general secondary studies. Caution: the non French-speaking students could have certain difficulty according to the degree of accuracy expected. This is not a teaching of the French type Foreign language (FLE). An extra effort from this public is often required, according to the level of control of the language.

Placement test on 24th September 2010. Premed course taught to small groups from October to December (if needed). Med Eng 1course taught in the second semester with a series of self-assessment exercises and a self-assessment test. Written exam in June.

Démarche scientifique: Working sessions organized in small groups.

French: the teaching is made of a meeting with ex catedra presentation and then a series of working sessions in sub-groups, more interactive.

The MedEng 1 and Premed course books will be available from the INTERCOPY shop of September.

All students are required to buy both course books, which together represent the English course for the 1st year of the Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Dentistry.

Assessment :  
English

Written exam.
Students will be asked to answer multiple-choice and T/F questions on the medical vocabulary listed in the MedEng1 course book as well as on a sight text dealing with a medical subject.

The grade for English is part of the global grade for the Module "Apprentissage à l'approche transdisciplinaire des problèmes biomédicaux".

Examination in session in the form of multiple choice questions (QCM), of questions with short open answer (QROC) or of open-ended questions (QO).

Warning statement: evaluation or exam papers not or misidentified will not be taken into account.

1. Considering the significant differences among 1st-year students and the limited teaching time, supervised self-learning and remedial work should be given due attention.

Students are encouraged to work every week and seriously do the work required for each course Unit.

2. The students can also train online. To do so, simply log on to http://www.islv.ulg.ac.be. Click on ANGLAIS and INTERFACE ETUDIANTS in order to have access to the exercises.

3. They can also purchase the ISLV Grammaire Anglaise de Base with exercises (and key). It is available from the Point de Vue on the Sart Tilman campus.
