| Course contents : | The anthropology of migration has undergone various developments as a result of academic traditions and historial and political contexts specific to the United States and various European countries. A panorama of these different approaches will be given and illustrated by looking at publications tackling, in particular, African migration to France, ethnicity, the 'transnational' perspective, 'transnational' families and refugees. Different theoretical inputs will allow for the examination of concepts used and the approaches presented. More widely, this means of grasping the specificity (in terms of methodological concepts and groundwork) which an anthropological approach to migration involves. Examples of dynamic familial migration and its repercussions for family structure, children, education, intergenerational relationships and relationships in both the country of origin and the host country will be examined. At a time when questions relating to migration are at the forefront, using the methodological tools and concepts which anthropology provides, brings a critical distance to a subject which is, by definition, constantly in flux and subject to controversy. |
