Course contents :  Understanding the spiritual answers which mankind has developed in response to the questions inherent in the human condition has intrigued anthropologists since the very beginning of the discipline. Thus different theories have been elaborated to understand religion across time and continents, whether originating in the myths, rituals or even day-to-day practices to which it gives rise and to which it continues to give rise to this day. After deconstructing the idea of religion and tackling different approaches to religion, we will, through the use of examples, focus on the value of certain theories, their possible limitations as well as criticisms of them. In this way, the borders of the religious will be progressively defined. Finally, the accent will be put specifically upon contemporary forms of religion (conversion, new churches, magico-religious practices, ...) which open the door to new challenges and new tools and hence revisit the central tenet of this discipline.
Course objective :  Students will acquire a good knowledge of the history of this field and the theories which have developed over time. The use of methodological and conceptual tools will enable students to tackle contemporary expressions of religion with the critical distance which is characteristic of the anthropological approach.
Prerequisites :  The course will take place in the first quarter.
Organization :  The course will take place in the first quarter.
Written notes :  Students will receive articles and extracts from publications, a selective bibliography and filmography as well as a list of websites (written and video material).
Assessment :  Students will create a thematic report which they will present orally and a final written report (instructions for these two exercises will be given in class).
Contacts :  I meet with students by appointment (Elodie.Razy@ulg.ac.be).
