Course contents :  The ethnographic approach, which was originally developed at the time of major discoveries and the European colonial era, has in the last few decades seen some new developments, notably in our own society. Based on observation methods and interview, experiences on the ground can only be understood in the light of the history of this approach (from pre-ethnology to the present day), its epistemological developments and the controversy which it has courted and which it attracts to this day. This course proposes an epistemological framework to tackle field work, based on critical analysis of texts, lectures and various methodological tools, completed with experimentation based on practical exercises.
Course objective :  Students will acquire a critical knowledge of the birth and history of the ethnographic approach as well as past and current debates and controversies. They will become familiar with, among other things, the methodological tools which will be presented either during classes or during field experiments.
Prerequisites :  None
Organization :  The course will take place in the second quarter.
Written notes :  Students will receive articles, extracts from publications, and a selective bibliography as well as a list of websites (written and video material).
Assessment :  Students will carry out a written analytical summary of a publication from the bibliography and a written report relating to a mini-observation that they themselves have carried out (instructions concerning these two exercises will be given in class).
Contacts :  I meet with students by appointment (Elodie.Razy@ulg.ac.be).
