Course contents :  I. Elements of general pathology: study of the host response against abnormal stimuli underlying diseases
II. Elements of special pathology: 1) bovine spongiform encephalopathy and prion diseases
III. Elements of special pathology: 2) viruses
IV. Elements of special pathology: 3) bacteria
V. Elements of special pathology: 4) parasites
VI. Hygiene of livestock farming (delivery, new born, milking)
VII. Elements of fight against animal diseases (legislation, veterinary organisations)
VIII. Main zoonoses
IX. Elements of epidemiology and survey (sampling)
Course objective :  The aim of this course is to give the students a series of rules and mechanisms for the identification, the prevention and the control of the main diseases of livestock and of the zoonoses.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- To propose a global and synthetic approach of the diseases affecting livestock
- To teach the basic principles of animal health, epidemiology and control of animal diseases, both epizootic and enzootic.
- To teach the future bioengineers how to detect and react against the onset of a disease in a herd or flock and prevent it by adequate hygienic and biosafety measures.
- To contribute to the individual development of a medical approach, to train about the relativity of parameters in medicine, to initiate to the scientific approach and to invite to a continuous self-criticism.
Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge of animal biology, anatomy and physiology is a prerequisite to follow this teaching

Le cours est basé sur les cours dispensés à la Faculté de Médecine Vétérinaire (Ulg) c'est à dire le cours de pathologie vétérinaire générale & spéciale (Profs Coignoul & Desmecht), de pathologie des maladies bactériennes (Prof J. Mainil), celui de pathologie des maladies virales (Prof E. Thiry) et celui des maladies parasitaires (Prof B. Losson) ainsi que sur les cours de mes deux prédécesseurs, les Drs Meulemans & Kerkhofs.
