ANAP0230-2  General pathological anatomy
Duration :  20h Th, 10h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in dental sciences, 2nd yearSecond semester2
Holder(s) :  Philippe Delvenne
Language :  French language
Course contents :  We first study the consequences of attacks on cells and tissues: cell death due to necrosis or apoptosis, tissue necrosis, cell and tissue adaptation, in particular surcharge alterations. Next we consider the organism's responses: inflammation, immunity, mending, healing. Immune responses can themselves contribute to the development of lesions: these are hypersensitive reactions, the importance of which will be demonstrated by considering the responses of infectious agents (tuberculosis) in transplant rejections and in auto-immune diseases. Diseases that attack blood vessels and interrupt blood flow lead to serious disorders and a major cause of mortality. Hence we will study antherosclerosis, the formation of thrombosis, embolisms and coronaries. The study of benign and malignant tumours leads to understanding their morphological characteristics, their origins and their pathogenics. Finally the effects on organisms of ionising and non-ionising radiation will be studied.
Course objective :  Pathology is the study of diseases. The course introduces attacks which produce lesions in cells, tissues and organs, as well as the organism's reactions. It outlines lesion pathogenics. It complements Biochemical Pathology and serves to provide the basics necessary to understanding diseases, in defining their causes, the way they are formed and the anatomical lesions they produce. It serves as an introduction to the consequences of attacks on the way organs function (physiopathology) and their clinical signatures as diseases (Medical and Surgical Pathology).
Prerequisites :  A good understanding of courses taught in terms 3 and 4, of which histology is an absolute requirement.
Workshops :  Six parts broken down in the following way; 1 two hour session in the practical work room in groups of 30 students preceded by a preparation session given by Dr Ph. Delvenne (groups of 30 students, compulsory attendance). No materials is necessary (except for a photograph). Computers with CD-ROM drives are located in the practical work room. Pathology courses with Multiple Choice Questions have been installed on them. Website: comments on Practical work sessions, together with illustrations, course outlines and a list of exam questions are found at http://www/anapatho.ulg.ac.be
Organization :  The course is given in the first semester and forms a part of the Humans and Disease module.
Written notes :  - BASIC PATHOLOGY by Kumar, Cotran and Robins (7th edition, Saunders Ed., 2003): an excellent course book which includes also Special Anatomy which will be studied in the 2nd and 3rd doctorates.
- ROBBINS-PATHOLOGIC BASIS OF DISEASES by Cotran, Kumar and Collins (6th Edition, Saunders Ed., 1999): an excellent course book with references, it is more complete than Basic Pathology (if you buy this course book there is no need to buy BASIC PATHOLOGY)
- Anatomie Pathologique générale et Spéciale by A. Stevens and J. Lowe, De Boeck Université, 1997
- a useful CD-ROM: PATHOLOGY by A. Stevens et J. Lowe, published by Mosby,
