Course and exercises

The following topics will be discussed through the course :

- How to interprete the finalities of the geography teaching in accordance with the "missions law" and to design the identity of a geography teacher today ?
- How to translate some geographical competences in learning objectives, in accordance with the different programs ?
- How to help the pupils to develop the "thinking geography" in territorial problems solving ?
- What does it mean to think a problem with its global complexity ?
- How to design and organise a study case in a socioconstructivist process ?
- How to create different learning strategies ?
- How to design a methodology to evaluate the learning ?
- How to use various media in the classroom ?

During the workshops, the students will prepare some lessons to be tested during teaching practices and they will trained to make use of stimulating methods.

Training course : teaching observation

See AESS0218-A-a (http://myulg.ulg.ac.be/MyULg/PW/vue_ep.do?as_decl=10855&as_type=EP_COMP)

Training course : teaching

The teaching practices are crucial moments for the gradual learning of the requested competences.

The students must be engrossed in the lessons preparation and in the teaching. So, the student must be sign a charter that engages him/her morally and pedagogically towards the masters of the teaching practices and that stipulates his/her binding agreements. If the student wouldn't respect the charter, the teaching practices could be stopped.

Reflexive practical work

The reflexive workshops are strongly linked with experiences in the classroom.

Course objective :
Course and exercises

The main objectives are three :

- To get the references necessary to prepare relevant and adjusted geography lessons which involve the pupils totaly and globaly.
- To develop some competences in communication, organisation and management of the learning in the classroom.
- To develop the individual and collective reflexivity, to build a vocational identity as geography teacher.

Training course : teaching observation

The observation practices are divided into two steps :

- the aims of the four first hours are, for the students, to discover consciousness of the scolar context as intending teachers and to observe geography lessons with a critical thinking.

The following hours are made into the institution where the teaching practices will be taken. The aim is to have an idea of the context (the master's teaching style, the pupils, the classroom...).

Training course : teaching

See general objectives AESS0218-A-a (http://myulg.ulg.ac.be/MyULg/PW/vue_ep.do?as_decl=10855&as_type=EP_COMP)

Reflexive practical work

- To make a critical analysis of the observed and teached lessons by the students, in order to enlarge their vision of the geography and of the geography didactics.
- To design for each student some ways to improve his/her teaching practice and some points to study deeply for his/her own learning.

Prerequisites :
Course and exercises

Licence or master (1st year) in geography.

Training course : teaching observation

None for the first four hours.
For the following, the presence of the student must be regular at the lectures and at all the workshops sessions.

Training course : teaching

To be allowed to make the teaching practices, the presence of the student must be regular at the lectures and at all the workshops sessions.
Moreover, to be allowed to make the teaching practices 2, the student must have done his/her port-folio with all the required productions finished and improved.

Workshops :
Course and exercises

The exercices are organised in workshops :

1. To build a "systemic" documentary portfolio on a specific topic.
2. To translate a theorical topic for secondary school students.
3. To formulate competences and objectives.
4. To choose an appropriate study case.
5. To design, give life to and make capital out of a stimulating phase to begin a lesson.
6. To design and give life to "problems-situations".
7. To choose and make capital out of images (fixed and animated ones).
8. To choose and make capital out of texts; to help pupils to write texts.
9. To choose and make capital out of maps.
10. To prepare a lesson to be tested during the teaching practices (in general education).
11. To conceive some tools in order to evaluate the pupils.

Training course : teaching observation

The informations picked during the observation practices will be used for feeding the collective thinking through the lectures and the reflexive workshops.

Training course : teaching

Builded from the topics given by the masters of the teaching practices, all the workshops sessions feed the preparation of the lessons that the students will give.

Organization :
Course and exercises

The lectures and the workshops are founded on participative processes; so, the regular attendance and the involvment of the students are requested to stimulate individual and collective learning dynamics.
- the lectures and workshops are done each wednesday (see the horary on the Cifen website : www.cifen.ulg.ac.be). - the 10 hours of observation in different secondary schools are spited as following : 4 at the end of september and 2 before the teaching practices in november. - the 20 hours of teaching practices in general education are divided in two periods : 4h in november and 16 in january-february (see the horary on the Cifen website : www.cifen.ulg.ac.be). - 5 hours of reflexive exercices.
The lectures, exercices, teaching practices and reflexive exercices are under the responsability of prof. Christine Partoune. The workshops are managed by C. Partoune, professor, and by Martine Colémont, pedagogical monitors.

Training course : teaching observation

The first four hours must be made in october, in little groups of 3 students.

Training course : teaching

In geography, the teaching practices masters are choosen by the the professor responsible of the course. The university conclude a collaboration agreement with some scolar institutions.

Each student carry out the teaching practices into 2 different scolar institutions and in 2 different channels : the first and the second in general channel and the third in technical/professional channel. If possible, two different education network will be experienced : the official education network (French Community/Province/municipality) and the catholic education network.
The allowing of the places where to make the teaching practices is acted in concert with the students.

The periods for the teaching practices are indicated in the horary (see on the Cifen website : www.cifen.ulg.ac.be).
The students are not allowed to go beyond these limits without special derogation.

Reflexive practical work

Three sessions will be opened for partim I (see on the Cifen website)

Assessment :
Course and exercises

Training evaluation : - Exercices made durint the workshops : feedback (sometimes a note) by the pairs and by the teachers; - Teaching practices 1 in november : report by the secondary teacher and by the professor of geographical didactic; - Teaching practices 2 in january-february :report by the secondary teacher and by the professor of geographical didactic; - Training notebook : individual feedbacks after each teaching practices.
Certificative evaluation : - Writing exam on the theory* : compulsorily in january. - Port-folio (the rough productions made during the wordshops have to be finalised and improved). - Teaching practices in january-february.
* The student must have achieved all the asked exercices to be allowed to present the exam on the theory. ** The evaluation of the teaching practices is based on three points of view : the one of the teacher which receive and supervise the student, the one of the professor (after a visit and through the reading of the lessons preparations), the one of the student (dashboard).

Training course : teaching observation

Two observation reports must be done :
1. in october, at least for the 17th;
2. in february, at least for the 13th.

These reports are involved in the student's training notebook.

Training course : teaching

The evaluation of the teaching practices takes in account the improvement of the student.

An evaluation grid shows when the criterions and indicators are taken in account for a "formative" evaluation (* and **) or for a "certificative" evaluation (***). The grid is downloadable on the Cifen website, section "special didactics in geography" : www.cifen.ulg.ac.be

The teaching practices 2 represents 40% of the final score for the course of special didactic partim I.

Reflexive practical work

The feedings of the reflexive workshops will be recorded by the students in their training notebook.
