ZOOL0213-2  Advanced Questions on Ethology
Duration :  30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Biology of organism and ecology, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année3
Holder(s) :  Mathieu Denoël
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The course is a complement of the courses of ethology and behavioural ecology with a perspective in amphibian conservation. It is at the interface between fundamental and applied sciences: from knowledge to conservation.

The lectures consist in (1) a presentation of species diversity mainly in temperate regions ; (2) a synthesis of their biological particularities : life cycle, intraspecific diversity (heterochrony), habitat, feeding habits, reproductive behaviour, sensory perspection ; (3) an analysis of their status and decline in function of varied risks: habitat change, invasive species, emerging disease ; and (4) a discussion on ethics in amphibian research.
Course objective :  The aim of the course is to show the importance of the knowledge of the biology of species in a perspective of conservation in taking amphibians as models
Prerequisites :  He is useful, but not mandatory, to have bases in ethology, behavioural ecology and conservation
Workshops :  Practicals will depend on the experience of students. They will consist, at least partly, in field excursions on amphibian habitats. They may also include a bibliographic analysis in amphibian conservation.
Organization :  The content of the course is depending on the past of the students. The field excursions will take place during the reproductive period of amphibians in the second quadrimester.
Written notes :  If power point presentations are projeted, a copy of them would be given to the students
Assessment :  The evaluation will be based on an oral exam and/or on an appreciation of the practicals (report, field excursions)
