Course contents :  The course is an introduction to sociology of migration and ethnicity through the study of some of the main texts of the discipline drawn both from American and European sociology.

This year, Marco Martiniello and Vince Parrillo (William Paterson University, Wayne, New Jersey (USA)), will teach the course.
Course objective :  The aim of the course is to provide the students with a theoretical basis as well as with a global picture of the classical American and European literature in the field of sociology of migration and ethnicity.
Prerequisites :  A passive and active knowledge of written and spoken English is indispensable.

Workshops :  Each Student will write a 5 pages paper presenting the main ideas of one of the texts we will study (2 pages) and a critical discussion of the text (3 pages).

PRESENCE IN CLASS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Organization :  The course could use 3 pedagogical tools:
- Lectures by the teachers
- Seminars based on the reading and discussion of texts as well as on presentations made by students
-Lectures given by external guests.

The course will start on February 4 with a joint introductory session (Marco Martiniello and Vince Parrillo)

Session 2 to 6: Sociology of migration: a US perspective (Vince Parrillo)
Sessions 7 to 11: Sociology of Migration: European perspectives (Marco Martiniello)

Session 12: Joint concluding session: what can EU and USA can learn from each other? (Marco Martiniello and Vince Parillo)
