Credits/ECTS :
Advanced Master in Tropical and Subtropical Culture ProtectionPremier quadrimestre1,5
Holder(s) :
Substitute(s) :  Philippe Lepoivre
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  1. General introduction on plant virology
2. Replication in plant pathogen viruses
3. Movement of viruses in infected plants
4. Genetic variability of plant viruses
5. Transmission of plant viruses
6. Means used to control virus diseases in plants
7. Bananas and plantains viruses: CMV, BBrMV, BBTV, BSV and BanMMV

The course is completed by a visit to a center performing quarantine actvities on virus diseasesinfecting tropical species, i.e. bananas and plantains.
Course objective :  The course aims at giving to the students a synthetic view of the specificities of plant viruses [their biology as well as their interactions with the plants, their environment and vectors]. The course also presents the bases of the different control strategies of virus diseases.
After completing the course the student is expected to
After completing the course the student must show its capacity of using information resources to:
1. Identify the different steps of the virus cycle targeted by the control methods
2. Quantify the impact of the different control strategies on the development of the epidemics
3. Evaluate the biological and socio economical constraints on:
- The choice of the control methods by growers to ensure a sustainable production
- The feasibility of development of control methods (logical of the developer - chemists, breeders, biotechnologists)
Prerequisites :  A general education in plant pathology is necessary to allow students following this course without strong difficulties. In fact, the present course is organised around practices aspects which necessitate enough knowledge in general plant pathology.
