Course contents :  OPTICS

Ray optics: nature of light, ray optics principles, reflection and refraction, image formation, lenses and optics instruments.
Wave optics: Huygen's construction, interference, diffraction and polarization.
Notions of photometry and colorimetry.

MECHANICS

Vectors
Kinematics in one dimension.
Kinematics in two dimensions.
Dynamics : Newton's laws of motion, friction.
Work, power and energy.
Energy conservation.
Momentum conservation and collisions.
Center of mass.
Rotational motion for a fixed axis, torque, moment of inertia.
Angular momentum conservation, equilibrium.
Course objective :  Introduction to scientific reasoning.
Introduction to problem solving.
Introduction to the notion of model in sciences.
Learning of approximations and order of magnitude.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- establish a scientific reasoning process
- be able to solve problems and to understand the notion of models;
- estimate order of magnitudes and to justify approximations.
Prerequisites :  G.C.E. at advanced level / High School Diploma.
