| Course contents : | The content is divided into two main parts. First, the classical methods of statistical inference (sampling distributions, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing) are developed in details. Then, an introduction to some popular non parametric methods (non parametric sign and wilcoxon tests, bootstrap, density estimation by kernel) is given. |

| Course objective : | - Make the student familiar with the most basic and important statistical methods which will be of use in all the more specialized statistics courses available in the master degree in mathematics or statistics.
- Draw attention to the fact that most parametric methods require stringent assumptions while there exist alternative methods that are less demanding and quite efficient. |

| Prerequisites : | Probability and descriptive statistics |
|
| Workshops : | There are 40 hours of practicals attached to this course. These 40 hours will be divided into tutorials and practicals in the computer room of the mathematical Institute. Moreover, some hours will be kept for personnal research directed by an assistant. More information will be available at the start of the academic year. |

| Organization : | The courses and the tutorials/practicals are given over the two semesters according to a timetable distributed to the students in the beginning of the academic year. |
|
| Written notes : | Notes (on the theory and on the exercises) will be sold to the students at the beginning of the academic year. |
|
| Assessment : | The final mark is a weighted mean of the marks attributed to the three following assesments (organised during the examen session of May-June):
-written exam on exercises.
- oral exam on theory.
- exam in the computer room (use of R, interpretation of data and statistical analyses) |
