Course contents :  The course begins with an introduction to the historical and sociological background to Black British literature. The rest of the course is devoted to the discussion of selected poems and short stories, as well as the following texts:
Fred D'Aguiar, Feeding the Ghosts (Vintage)
Jackie Kay, Trumpet (Picador)
Caryl Phillips, A Distant Shore (Vintage)
Roy Williams, Days of Significance (Methuen)
Course objective :  Introduction to "Black British" Literature with a discussion of representative literary works.
Prerequisites :  Good knowledge of English.
Organization :  First term, 2 hours a week.
Written notes :  Poems, short stories and excerpts from novels will be available at the beginning of the course.
Assessment :  Written essay and oral examination.
