Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The remedial course consists of two distinct modules (i.e. a 20-hour remedial grammar course and a 10-hour introduction to the reading of psychological texts)

Here is the detail of the CEFRL levels of the course : listening (B1), reading (B1); [speaking (B1), writing (B1)]
Course objective :  - Refreshing and increasing students' knowledge of grammar.

- Activating reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, detecting text coherence.

- Understanding the main point of radio or TV programmes on topics of specific interest (slow and clear delivery).

- Expanding the vocabulary related to the fields of psychology (or criminology depending on the student's study course).
Prerequisites :  A basic knowledge of English (equivalent to the A2-level of the CEFRL)
Organization :  Weekly one and a half hour classes in average-sized groups from the first week of November till the Easter break.

The remedial grammar module will be devoted to revising the basics of English grammar. This course will be taught in French, which should be regarded as an exception to the rule though.

The second module will focus on English used as a tool of communication. In this communicative part of the course we will deal with a range of psychology-related themes. Students will be required to participate actively in class, which implies that they must have prepared some assignments before coming to class.

Finally, students will have to prepare the fifteen modules from the self-study course book. Those modules are made up of short texts, vocabulary exercises and revision of grammar points. All the keys to the exercises are included in the course book.

Regular practise is key to the student's progress.

Practical details as to the organisation of the course aimed at preparatory year students in Criminology will be announced to the students during the first classes.
Written notes :  Course book Remedial Grammar Course (available now at Intercopy)

The course book for the second term's follow-up module will be available at Intercopy as of the beginning of the second semester.

The self-study course book will be available at Intercopy as of mid-October.

Preparatory year students in Criminology will have to buy the course book Remedial Grammar Course (available at Intercopy) as well as the two handbooks Academic Encounters - Life in Society (Cambridge University Press - available at Audivox, Rue du Méry).
Assessment :  1° A grammar test will assess students' assimilation of the grammar rules. This test will take place in January. It will count for 20% of the final mark.

2° The final written exam will be based on 1) the grammar module, 2) all the materials included in the second, communicative part of the course and 3) the self-study module. It will assess students' reading abilities as well as their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary. It will amount to 80% of the final grade.

Multiple Choice Questions will be used for both the January test and the final written exam.

The assessment of preparatory year students in Criminology will differ in some respects from the one described above. More details will be given to students in due course.
