| Course contents : | Translation of general interest texts presenting different levels of language, different registers and covering various subjects. Deepening knowledge of contrastive linguistics. Development of various translation difficulties and rendering the correct styles and register of the source text. Reflexive approach to translation mechanisms and techniques. Introduction of the concept of terminology and its application through translation of texts in specific fields (law, finance, business correspondence etc.) Introduction to literary translation. Development of French writing skills. |

| Course objective : | At the end of this course, the student will be able to translate general interest texts, analyse them, convey them and rephrase the meaning. Students will also be able to comment on translation difficulties and justify their choices. Students will be capable of using basic translation tools (monolingual and bilingual dictionaries) as well as carrying out research using specialised dictionaries or IT tools (Internet). Students should successfully complete their translation taking account of the linguistic and stylistic particularities of the source and target languages. |

| Prerequisites : | Solid basic knowledge of Spanish. Excellent mastery of the target language. |

| Organization : | Two hours of classes per week in the first and second quadrimesters. Compulsory class given at the Haute Ecole de la Ville de Liège.
Teaching methods:
Reading texts and written preparation of translations at home. Group comparison and critical correction of individual translations. Development of a final shared version. Short exercises in individual translation without a translation dictionary and group correction. |

| Assessment : | - 20% of the grade: a non-exempting assessment is organised at the end of the first quadrimester
- 40% of the grade: individual translation work of three pages of a newspaper article and continuous assessment (some texts to translate in class will be graded, preparation of the exercises, participation in class)
- 40% of the grade: Written exam at the end of the academic year |
