Gilbert, Nicolas-Joseph-Florent "Esprit chagrin et génie malheureux", born in Lorraine in 1750, died aged 30. Advisor to Alembert, he fell out with him and found himself "a recluse in an attic, destined to live by his pen, miserably". In 1772 and then 1773, he presented two pieces to the Academie Française competition. "His work, The Unhappy Poet, full of elegiac accents, demonstrates a certain talent, or at least a certain sensitivity, did not even receive a mention; it was Jean-François de La Harpe, director of Mercure de France, who received the prize".
Such was the beginnings of an implacable enmity between the two men. He denounced the banalities and postures of philosophism, in particular the Encyclopaedists and became an acquaintance of Fréron, the director of the Année Littéraire. His satire, "The 18th Century" was examined by authors of the time.
We will study the debates in which this "meteor of the literary field" became embroiled in the Liègois press of his time. We will link his Adieux à la Vie, a poem in the pre-romantic theme to the literary movement connecting Gessner and Young.
