Course contents :  Life appeared about 3.5 billion years ago. Major clades within the three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea and Eucarya, diversified during the Precambrian, well before the Phanerozoic. This course will discuss the multidisciplinary methods required to trace the early evolution of life between 3.8 and 0.54 billions years. Following a theoritical introduction, a research project and the redaction of a written report will form the major part of the course.
Course objective :  At the end of the class, the student has to be able to:
-understand the methods used to study precambrian traces of life
-know the major steps of evolution within the various clades of the three of life
-conduct a research project
-write a report from his project as a scientific paper, with a discussion of the data requiring a bibliographical research
Prerequisites :  micropaleontology or paleontology class
Written notes :  Scientific papers will be accessible to the students. The book "Life on a Young Planet" par AH Knoll (Princeton univ Press, 2003, 277 p) will serve as a base for the introduction, together with recent literature.
Assessment :  the research project and the written report as a scientific article
