| Course contents : | The course is devoted to the questions of development and spatial planning. It includes two main sections. The first deals with the issue of the unequal development of the territories, at both, the international level and the regional level. This section develops the related concepts and theories by focusing on the Third World countries on the one hand and on the European Union on the other hand. The second section is devoted to spatial planning policies. It develops their main objectives and disposals. The Belgian case, with a focus on the Walloon situation, is treated at the end of the course. |
| Course objective : | Provide to the future geographers theoretical and practical knowledges about, on the one hand, the unequal development of the World and its regions and, on the other hand, spatial planning policies. Those knowledges have two main purposes: - to allow students to reframe issues and political debates in the fields of development and spatial planning; - to prepare students to intervene in the fields of territorial development and spatial planning (local development interventions, urban planning interventions, management of European projects...). In addition, the course aims to prepare students for a detailed analysis of planning tools used in Wallonia (course "Politics of sustainable development: land and environment), Master 2). |
| Prerequisites : | 1. Geography concepts and methods as taught in Bac 1, 2 and 3. 2. Notions of micro- and macroeconomics 3. An open attitude towards social and economic problems. |
| Workshops : | Two exercises are proposed: - a practical research on regional disparities and regional diversities in different countries; - a comparative study of development and spatial planning policies of these countries. |
| Organization : | - 15 hours of theoretical lectures; - 30 hours of workshops and practical exercices; - 2 days of fieldworks. |
| Written notes : | Textbooks: B. Mérenne-Schoumaker, Développement et aménagement des territoires, 2007, unpublished. Slide presentations based on the textbook. Various illustrations. |
