Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The course integrates theory and practice in a general approach where each student is directly concerned with both, worshops, projects and fieldworks.
The following issues are more deeply treated:
- the vocabulary of urban geography;
- the major research themes;
- the influence of cities in the organisation of territories (in Belgium, Europe and the developing countries);
- urban models;
- spatial and morphological structures of urban districts.
Course objective :  The major objective of the course is to provide the theoretical background in the field of urban geography and to learn - with different exercises - how to analyse and study urban territories.
Prerequisites :  Course of "BAC 1" : "Introduction aux sciences géographiques"
Organization :  - 21 hours (7 x 3 hours) = lecturer presentation
- 9 hours (3 x 3 hours) = exchange and methodological seminars, presentation on the basis of personal works.
- 8 hours of worshops in order to prepare the seminars, the presentations and the fieldworks.
- 2 days of fieldworks prepared by the students about the Liège districts.
Written notes :  1. B. Mérenne-Schoumaker, cours de géographie urbaine : ouvrage de base, unpublished.
2. B. Mérenne-Schoumaker, lire les territoires d'ici et d'ailleurs (4). Les Villes du Monde, GEO nAAA°51, 2002, 148 p.
3. J.-P. Paulet, Géographie urbaine, A. Colin, Coll. U, Paris, 2005 (2e édition).
Assessment :  The first part of the work is evaluated with an oral exam while the second is co-evaluated on the basis of three grids, in relation with three learning processes :
- to master the basic vocabulary in urban geography;
- to realize an original research on an important city;
- to organize and guide a visit in an urban quarter.
50% of the quotation is related with the first part and 50% with the second part.
