Course contents :  Importance and role of forests in the world. Objective notion of forest - ecosystem concept, climax, development patterns. Man and forest - multiple-use approach. Silviculture and agronomy ¿ similarities and differences. Silviculture as applied ecology (scope and terminology of silvicultural practices).Main components of the forests. Stand dynamics (interactions between factors, structure - cohorts and age classes, growth). Types of forests and regeneration methods (coppice, coppice with standards, high forests). Forestation and afforestation. Types of treatments applied to forests to maintain and enhance their utility for various purposes. Presentation of silvicultural systems and methods of regeneration under different constraints and/or conditions (artificial, natural ¿ silviculture near to nature). Management of even-aged and irregular stands (pure and mixed). Silvicultural management of wildlife habitat and watershed ecosystems. Agroforestry concept. Overview of tropical forestry and its environment.
Course objective :  Introduction to the forest as an ecosystem and its place within the agronomic and rural environment. Place of the forest in the world and the most important challenges (climate, carbon, biodiversity). Presentation of the main forestry techniques used to manage natural and artificial forests. Objectives and ways to implement forest management.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- be able to analyse the art of producing and managing forested areas;
- understand the forest ecosystem dynamics, its specificity and multiple interactions;
- be familiar with the increasing importance of the multifunctional role and benefits of forests all around the world (timber, wildlife, recreation, biodiversity, water,..) and their importance according to the society's demands;
- become familiar with the most important types of sustainable silvicultures used in natural and artificial forests;
- be able to integrate guidelines of forest management in the frame of renewable natural resources management.
