Course contents :  In analysing the history of publishing and the sociology of publishing practices, this course will take place in the 2009-2010 academic year. Sessions will take place twice a month, and will alternate between the history of publishing practices in Belgium - from Plantin to the present day - and case studies, as often as possible with the collaboration of people working in this field.

Plan of the historical part of the course:

I. The era of printers: from Thierry Martens to the Plantin-Moretus dynasty. II. The bookshop business in the Ancien Régime. III. The golden age of counterfeiting (1815-1850) IV. The birth of literary publishing (1960-1914) V. Religious publishing VI. Literary publishing between 1920 and 1945 VII. The comic book industry VIII. The Marabout epoch IX. Elements of contemporary publishing (the arts, scholarly publishing and university publishing) X. Elements of contemporary publishing (literature and comic books)
Course objective :  1) To incorporate an in-depth knowledge of the publishing system in Belgium, and its relationship with French publishing and the wider French-speaking world;
2) to be able to consider the publishing system from the two points of view of history and sociology of practices; 3) To be able to distinguish in contemporary publishing between the constraints inherited from the past and the potential advantages of the sector.
Prerequisites :  Students who have not followed the course on Analysis of Cultural Institutions (BAC2 Information and Communication) must read the following book: Pascal Durand and Anthony Glinoer, Naissance de l'Editeur. L'édition à l'âge romantique, Paris-Bruxelles, Les Impressions Nouvelles, coll. "Réflexions faites", new edition. 2008.
Organization :  The timetable will be set in agreement with the students, who are requested to get in touch with the lecturer at the start of the academic year.
