| Course contents : | This course addresses the characteristics of mediaeval "books" (codex), in terms of their creation, presentation and use. The approach taken outlines the contrasts between contemporary written materials.
This course, which will take place in the Marie Delcourt room at ULg, is illustrated by numerous preserved mediaeval manuscripts.
The following aspects which be addressed during the course: 1. The ULg manuscript collection room. 2. The codex revolution. 3. Study of the materials. 4. How the journals are composed. 5. Preparing material with a view to copying it. 6. "Mise en texte": the work of a copyist. 7. Formatting: illuminations. 8. Laying out the text (interchanges between text and illustration; reading aids). 9. Binding. 10. Conservation and deterioration. 11. Drafting a codicological notice. 12. Typology of manuscripts retained at ULg (texts and iconography) |
