| Course contents : | The course will tackle History of Art in association with other disciplines such as History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Literature and Psychoanalysis. The main objective is to meet the specific needs of students in their first undergraduate year of Landscape Architecture. The course will therefore be based on a central thematic guiding principle that is concretely adapted to the overall approach of an Applied Sciences faculty. The entire chronological progression of the course will be primarily based around the ideas of landscape, nature and space. This methodology will enable us to assess the evolution of various means of expression such as painting, sculpture and architecture, throughout the history of art from its beginnings to the present day. Not only will it enable us to highlight the specific stylistic features of each era, but it will also increase our understanding of the relationships connecting different artistic disciplines. Although our method focuses essentially on the question of landscape, it does not neglect the descriptive study of other genres and techniques that dominated certain artistic movements. It will also consider the specific features of contemporary art with its questioning of traditional media, and the appearance of new practices and technologies such as installations, land art, video art and digital art. |

| Course objective : | The course introduces students to observing, understanding and analysing works of art in their historical and spatial context. The course presents a critical selection of the main Western artistic trends from the inception of Western art up until the latest developments. After completing the course the student is expected to - grasp the various methods for understanding a work of art; - situate works in time and recognise specific stylistic features from different artistic movements through the ages; - understand the principles of nature, space and landscape in a specific historical setting, as well as from a more philosophical point of view that is integral to an aesthetic course. |
