| Course contents : | After the presentation of the historical character of the concept of nature, the lecture will study the different representations of nature in history of philosophy: * Nature as finished and closed totality: the classical and medieval conception of nature connected with contemplative science and craft techniques (Heraclite, Plato, Aristote, Thomas de Aquino, ...) * Nature as object of study to master: the modern conception of nature linked to an experimental science and to the possibility of a technical mastery (Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, ...) * Nature as a divine and organic totality: the romantic critique of the modern conception of nature: appearance of the pantheistic conception of nature (Rousseau, Schelling, Novalis, Hölderlin, ...) * Nature as a resource for technological exploitation: the conception of nature in the 19th century in the great political theories (liberalism and marxism), face to face with the industrial development of the time * Nature as phenomenal reality, nature and landscape: an outline of a contemporary conception of nature as a synthesis of objectivity and subjectivity, as an integration of the observer into experience itself of nature (from Husserl, Heidegger, Straus, ... to the contemporary theoreticians of landscape)
The lecture will attemps to illustrate the impact of the conceptions on the perception of nature and the reading of landscape as well as on the technical relation to nature, on the scientific observation of nature, on the representation of nature in art and mainly on the design of gardens, parks and landscapes. |

| Course objective : | * To provide a reflection and philosophical references about the theme of nature. * To present and to analyse the historical and the cultural character of the concept of nature. After completing the course the student is expected to - To understand and explain the philosophical notions about nature learnt during the lectures; - To show critical mind about affirmations concerning nature; - To review an essay about landscape. |
