Course contents :  Principles of geomorphopedological identification.
Guidelines for soil profile description and implementation (handbook and form of the Laboratory).
Humus characterisation.
Indices of edaphic characterization in forest environment.
Chemical and physical fertility factors and balance sheet.
Hydric and trophic interpretative keys of soil maps.
Options of soil management, improvement and even use of "marginal land".
Process and field truth in Ardenne.
Course objective :  To initiate to principles of operational pedology aiming at the knowledge of forest soils and to specify their ecosystemic role.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- read and interpret the soil map of Belgium,
- initiate a soil survey and perform a soil description,
- characterize humus types,
- conceive a strategy of soil sampling and soil analyses,
- interpret site physical, hydric and trophic parameters,
- argue about soil amelioration and management strategies.
