|
La sauvegarde du patrimoine s'inscrit à la fois dans la philosophie de "conservation intégrée" prônée par le Conseil de l'Europe et dans une politique de développement durable impliquant les reconversions économique, sociale et culturelle indispensables à la survie de ce patrimoine. Réhabiliter le bâti ancien, lui rendre une valeur d'usage liée à son époque et le restaurer imposent aussi de prendre en compte l'environnement, d'utiliser des techniques et des matériaux traditionnels ou de leur substituer des techniques nouvelles éprouvées et adéquates.
Le Master complémentaire vise à développer les capacités de réflexion et de conceptualisation préalables aux interventions sur l'ensemble du patrimoine architectural, urbain, rural ou paysager. Il prend également en compte l'analyse sociologique et prospective du patrimoine, tant dans les aspects culturels qu'économiques de la conservation intégrée.

Structure and positioning of the programme
|
Interdisciplinarity and pluridisciplinarity are essential parameters of the training.
The joint complementary masters is the only one in the French-speaking Community of Belgium to completely cover the field of preservation-restoration of cultural heritage and its specificities.
The integration of knowledge available within all the higher education institutes, on the the one hand, and the specialist skills in particular disciplines, on the other hand, make this training a source of excellence.
The programme includes two years of study (120 credits). Students may be authorised to spread one year of study over two consecutive academic years.

The modules.

Philosophy of heritage (11 credits)
Definitions and concepts - the emergence and evolution of the notion of conservation and restoration concepts - charters, conventions, declarations, international resolutions and directives - reuse in the history of architecture - integrated conservation and valuing heritage - specific conservation problems

History and Principles of Architecture (24 credits)
The styles : the specificities of the urban architecture, the regional characters of the rural architectures - The carcassing : foundations and structures, Study of materials, special Techniques -
Secondary work: follow up arts, facade, old materials and techniques, analysis of alterations and pathologies, restoration techniques

Historical Gardens - Landscape Design
History of garens and their evolution, archeological excavation, conservation and garden restoration - specific soil diagnostics of parks and gardens, management and maintenance plans

Methodology of prior studies and restoration techniques (24 credits)
Introduction to prior studies, documentary resources and documentary research - Sub-soil Archaeology - Building Archaeology - Techniques in Recording, Graphic Representation, Restoration and Simulation - Sanitary and Diagnostic Studies: Survey and Auscultation of Materials, Structures and Frameworks Technology, Analysis of Material, Structure and Framework Pathologies (structural and ground disorders), Risk Analysis Associated with Natural Phenomena - Preservation and Restoration Techniques: Monument - Archaeological Vestiges - Estimation and Cost Management - Economic Aspects of Heritage

Methodoly of establishing a restoration plan and monitoring work in progress (8 credits) - Masterplan - Project : sketches, pre-project, special specifications, post descriptions, health and safety files, surveying methods and codes, establishing quantity surveying and estimates - works : monitoring work in progress, acceptance (provisional and definitive)

Practical analysis: advanced questions (9 credits)
Visiting laboratories and research centres - appraisals and case studies

End of degree work (29 credits)
The end of degree work is an original and individual work, carried out under the guidance of one of the teachers. The subject is down to individual choice. It can be suggested by the supervisor(s). This choice must be made according to the knowledge acquired during the degree, and to the student's previous educational pathways.

The teaching
|
Ce Master complémentaire conjoint est organisé par les 3 Académies universitaires en collaboration avec les établissements d'enseignement supérieur (Instituts supérieurs d'architecture et Haute École Charlemagne) - sous réserve de leur approbation définitive. Cette nouvelle formation a été créée grâce à l'impulsion de l'Institut du Patrimoine wallon (Centre des métiers du patrimoine de la Paix-Dieu).
L'enseignement est assumé par une équipe de spécialistes issus des trois académies universitaires des instituts supérieurs d'architecture et de la haute école Charlemagne. Des experts extérieurs, praticiens de haut niveau feront également profiter les étudiants de leur savoir faire en intervenant commme conférencier dans certains modules.

Practical Organisation
|
Complementary Masters for the academic year 2008-2009. The modules are organised from the end of September to the end of April and sessions usually take place on Wednesday afternoons, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning (8.30 - 12.30 and 13.30 - 17.30).
The courses are given on the sites of the three university academies and on the site of the Centre des Métiers de la Paix Dieu.

Admissions and registration
|
Required qualification
Academic rank in Architecture, in masters in construction civil engineering, in landscape design in history of art and archeology: all orientations. Possibility of admission depending on dossier.
