| Course contents : | Subjects to be covered in this class are mainly centred around the problematic of the conservation of biodiversity and the root causes of its erosion (ignorance, poverty, high levels of debt contracted by countries in the South, economic inequality...) Also presented will be concrete solutions for certain local problems and legislative tools (international conventions such as RAMSAR, CITES, RIO - biodiversity). The function and the role of administration in the conservation of nature in the Walloon Region will also be discussed if students so desire. |
| Course objective : | To encourage students to reflect deeply on the great ecological challenges confronting humanity today.
To give students an opportunity to carry out complex projects and present the results in public. |
| Prerequisites : | A mind that likes to make connections and sufficient mastery of French will be helpful. |
| Organization : | Theoretical part of course: 15 hours of exposition in all; 5 seminar meetings, three hours in length. Practical work and practice sessions: practical work for this class will consist in an oral presentation by each student. Students will have to speak for 15 minutes on a subject having a relationship with the material of the course. The subject will be chosen by the student but must be approved by the instructor. This presentation will be followed by a discussion with the instructor and other students. The presentation will be accompanied by a written report 10-15 pages in length; the student's grade will be based in part on this report. This exercise is similar to the compilation of the bibliographic section of a "mémoire" and its exposition, and this will serve as "practice" for students. |
