| Course contents : |
 | | Companion Animal internal medicine |

 |
 | Students are trained through clinical rounds, practical seminars (how to approach a patient in emergency?, principles of fluid therapy, clinical cases in dermatology) and several multimedia documents on comanion animal internal medicine. Learning how to take a history and how to make a clinical examination will also be provided (on healthy dogs and clinical patients). |
 | | Companion Animal surgery |

 |
 | Students will participate to wet labs on cadavers, seminars (management of emergency cases, fluidotherapy,...) and will have access to multimedia tools dedicated to the surgical procedures performed during the wet labs. |
 | | Companion Animal reproduction, anaesthesiology and intensive care |

 |
 | The training is based on the students being involved in routine duties related to consultation, tratement, hospitalisation surgical preparationa nd anaesthesia and surgery of our patients. |
 | | Companion Cnimal medical imaging |

 |
 |
- Students are trained on printed radiographic films or on a computer reading station. Students will be mainly trained to recognize the radiographic view, to criticize the radiographic technique and to locate normal anatomical structures.
|
 | | Clinic for Birds, Rabbits and Rodents |

 |
 | Students take part in medical examinations, treatments and necropsies of birds, rabbits and new companion animals sent directly by owners or by veterinarians for specialized examinations |
|
 |
| Course objective : |
 | | Companion Animal internal medicine |

 |
 | The objectives of the clinical activities are
- be able to take a thorough history and complete clinical examination in dogs and cats
- understand and know the content of the practical seminars provided during the week
- make the transition between theoratical knowledge and real clinical cases
|
 | | Companion Animal surgery |

 |
 | - knowledge of theory related to the surgical procedures performed during the wet labs.
- be able to perform simple cutaneous flaps and simple osteosynthesis.
- knowledge of theory related to weekly seminars |
 | | Companion Animal reproduction, anaesthesiology and intensive care |

 |
 | Learn how to collect history elements, symptoms in relation to the cycle, pregnancy and pathological disorders of the reproductive system of small animals. Learn how to analyse data establish a differential to finally reach a diagnosis. Learn how to establish and administer a treatment aswel as recommend prevention Get familiar with surgical procedure in reproduction and particluarely with sterilisation techniques in the dog. |
 | | Companion Cnimal medical imaging |

 |
 |
- The main objective of the teaching activity is to stimulate the students to image analysis through interaction with the teachers. Specific objectives are: be able recognize and name the radiographic views, be able to criticize the radiographic technique, be able to identify normal anatomical structures, give a solid base of radiographic image analysis before applying theoretical knowledge to clinical cases film readings.
|
 | | Clinic for Birds, Rabbits and Rodents |

 |
 | The teaching objectives of the organized clinical activities are:
- to train students to the collection of clinical signs in birds, rabbits and NCA;
- to develop their diagnosis aptitudes;
- to make them establish a vital, economic, sporting or zootechnical prognosis;
- to apply treatment and settle preventive measures.
It must be emphasized that most often the diagnosis is based on post-mortem examination.
Post-mortem examinations:
- to settle a differential diagnosis and to determine the cause of death;
- to confirm or to establish the aetiological diagnosis and to propose the right confirming laboratory technique.
These post mortem examinations are a significant part of students' everyday work. |

| Assessment : |
 | | Companion Animal internal medicine |

 |
 | Students will be evaluated through a multiple choice questionnaire that will be held at the same time than the examination on the theoretical course of companion animal internal medicine (VETE0434-1).
This note will be balanced by the continuous evaluation of the work of the student during his week in the Clinic.
This note in Companion ANimal Internal Medicine Clinic will constitute 2/9 of the global note of Companion Animal Clinics.
Any non justified absence during the week of companion animal internal medicine clinical course will mean a general mark of 0/20 for the global note of Companion Animal Clinics regardless the marks obtained in the other constitutive topics of these Clinics.
In the case of second session, the result obtained on a multiple choice examination will determine the note in companion animal internal medicine clinic. |
 | | Companion Animal surgery |

 |
 | The students will be evaluated through a MCQ which will be part of the written exam relative to the course of CA surgery.
The marks will be modulated by a continuous evaluation throughout the clinical week.
These marks will account for 2/9 in the final mark of the CA clinic.
Any unjustified absence will be sanctionned by a 0/20, which in turn will lead to 0/20 for the whole CA clinics whatever the marks obtained in the other sections of the CA clinics.
For the second session, a new MCQ will provide the marks for the CA surgery clinic. |
 | | Companion Animal reproduction, anaesthesiology and intensive care |

 |
 | Prerequisite will be tested first thing on Wednesday morning. Questions specific to the clinical training will be included into the small animals and equine reproduction written exam.(VETE0436-1). The evaluation of the student's performance during the clinic and the marks for the prerequiste test will also be considered in the final mark. Any unjustified absence during the week of clinical course will mean a general mark of 0/20 for the subject:"Small Animal Clinic" regardless the marks obtained in the other constitutive topics. Examination in september will be similar to that of june. However, if number of students allow students would be informed on the day of 1st session results that an oral exam might be replacing the originally planned written exam.
|
 | | Companion Cnimal medical imaging |

 |
 | Each student will be evaluated orally during the week. The student should be able to describe the radiographic view, to criticize the technique and to localize normal anatomical structures. |
 | | Clinic for Birds, Rabbits and Rodents |

 |
 | Written work in group with continuous evaluation by the staff during the week and possibility of test at the end of the week.
This mark account for 2/9 of the final mark for the clinic of small animals.
Unjustified absence will lead to a 0/20 mark for the course but also for all courses under ref. VETE0450-1 whatever were the marks in the other courses
Students in September retakes will have to spend a week in the clinic at a moment determined by the incumbent (Associated Prof. Dr D. Marlier), possibly during holiday. During this week, the staff will continuously evaluate them. |
