| Course contents : | The course is dealing with all the biological groups of eucaryotic organisms potentially responsible for different diseases in domesticated and wild animals but also for some zoonoses. The fungi, the protozoa, the helminths and the arthropods are included. For each biological group the systematics, morphology, biology,physiology and some biochemical and immunological aspects of the host parasite relationship are successively described and represent a prerequesite for the study of parasitic and fungal diseases during the fifth year. For each group, a few examples are developed in detail during the lectures and are illustrated (Power Point Presentation and videos) |

| Course objective : | This course is dealing with the morphology and biology of parasites including fungi both in domesticated and wild animals and in the different bioclimatic regions.
A marked emphasis is given to the relations between the parasite, its host and the environment. The course is divided into 6 parts: a general introduction to Parasitology and its vocabulary, Mycology, Protozoology, Helminthology, Entomology and Acarology. At the end of the course, the student will have an overview on the different biological groups responsible for parasitic conditions in domestic and wild animals, and will be able to follow the specific course on parasitic diseases. |

| Prerequisites : | Fundamental knowledges in general biology, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, genetics and anatomy are necessary. |

| Workshops : | The practicals are organized in order to illustrate the lectures. All the relevant biological groups are dealt with. |
|
| Organization : | The entire course is given over two successive years. Twenty five hours are dedicated to General Parasitology and are given during the forth year. Seven hours of practicals are also given during the same year.They aim at the illustration of the lectures. |
|
| Written notes : | The following volumes are available at the student printing unit: Veterinary Protozoology (1 vol.); Mycology (1 vol.); Veterinary Entomology (1 vol.); Veterinary Helminthology (2 vol.). Additionally, a copy of the Power Point Presentation is available.
An illustrated CDRom dedicated to Veterinary Parasitology in temperate regions has been realized and will be used during the practicals or at home. |

| Assessment : | The examination is composed of three parts: a practical examination (identification of different parasites under the microscope and of photographic documents), two assay questions and a series of 10 questions with short or very short answers (Yes/No or a few words) |
