VETE0005-1  Biochemistry of Domestic Animals II
Duration :  40h Th, 10h Mon. WS
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in veterinary medicine, 3rd yearToute l'année6,5
Holder(s) :  Jean‑Marie Godeau
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Intermediate metabolisms of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids are developed successively, as well as proper regulation of each metabolism, and regulations connecting metabolisms between them. A special emphasis is made on the importance of each metabolism in the different tissues and regulations taking place at the tissue level. A special chapter is dedicated to ruminants.
Course objective :  Metabolisms and molecular mecanisms (enzymatic) taking place in the different tissues .Lectures are developped based on a medical orientation. Firstly, links are regularly developed between basic knowledge in medical biochemistry and pathology. Secondly, intrinsinc and extrinsinc (and thus hormonal) regulations of metabolisms are particularly described in details while species' particularities are pointed out as classical pathways are discovered.
Prerequisites :  Course of second candidature.
Organization :  The course is given according to the general structure as described above. The 30% time reduction in schedule (since the academic year 2001 - 2002) leads to a reduction in the matter that can concerns one or another part of the content described above Supervised works (TD) are organised to allow the student to assimilate te course matter. Furthermore, bibliographical research is carried out for the parts that will not be given during the lectures (due to schedule reduction).
A formative interrogation (optional) takes place during January.
Written notes :  Lecture notes correspond to the documents the lecturer uses during his classes (slides or notes). Students receive copies of these notes. According to student's comprehension during the lecture and modifications of his/her knowledge, the notes are modified year by year. So the student must purchase the last version of the course that the professor gave at the beginning of the year. New information, coming from scientific litterature (but not the books suggested for reading) are added to the course as original papers get published, when they bring some new relevant features in Veterinary Medicine. Consequently, the student's attendance to lectures allows her/him to complete the notes he received at the beginning of the year.
Reference Books (only basics) :
  • LEHNINGER's "Biochemistry", and STRYER's "Biochemistry" (Freeman, 1998 edit.) (availables at the library).
Assessment :  Final exams are written. The student must answer to specific questions that cover the matter given during the academic year. The answers to questions are quoted in a positive manner.
