STAT0720-1  Advanced Statistics Applied to Biomedical Sciences
Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
"licencié" in public health sciences: promotion of health orientation, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Holder(s) :  Adelin Albert
Substitute(s) :  Bernard Vrijens
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  This course is the second part of the teaching of Biostatistics in Public Health sciences. It addresses more advanced statistical methods, such as regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), contingency tables and non-parametric statistical techniques.

Each lesson consists of a theoretical exposition of the method followed by a session of practical applications, where the student will get used to solve statistical problems encountered in daily practice by means of the statistical package STATISTICA.
Course objective :  The course is intended to improve and enhance the use of biostatistics in health sciences, by insisting on statistical reasoning and problem solving rather than on the mathematics and the complexity of formula. Students should be able to carry out an in-depth statistical analysis of a dataset resulting from an experiment or a survey, in particular with respect to the thesis they will prepare later on in their cursus.
Prerequisites :  Students should have received the course "Biostatistics I" or some equivalent statistical course.
Workshops :  Total: 15 hours

In statistics, practice is most important. Students are therefore requested to attend the practicals. These will be scored and taken into account in the final score of the exam.

Please take with you your lecture notes, pocket calculator and a pad. The software STATISTICA will be given free.
Organization :  The course will be given on Tuesdays from 5 to 8 pm at the Mathematic Institute (Bldg B37, Pkg 32) by Professor Paul Gérard (Auditorium 01).
Written notes :  Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Biostatistics, A. Albert, edition 2005" at the secretarial office of Professor A. Albert (School of Public Health, University Hospital, CHU, B35) at the cost of 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in biostatistics in subsequent years.

Textbook
D.G. Altman. Practical statistics for medical research. Chapman & Hall, London, 2000.
Assessment :  A written test will take place in January. Any score of 10 or more will be considered as a success, exempting the student from the examination in June or September. All exams are written exams and students can used their lectures notes or any other documents. Exams are scored 0-20.
