| Course objective : | Problem of democratic processes is seen each year through the study of a definite thematic. During the academic year 2006-2007, it will be social capital theory through the work of Robert Putnam. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | Being able to read sociological literature in english |
 |
| Organization : | Students are supposed to read a part of a book and to prepare a lecture on their reading. The teacher or an assistant helps preparing the lecture.
Evaluation of students'work is made on basis of their lecture and the participation to the general discussions.
There's no examination but presence at the seminars is mandatory. |
 |
| Written notes : | This year, the course will be based on the book :
PUTNAM Robert (1993) : Making Democracy Work. Civic Traditions in modern Italy, Princeton, Princeton University Press.
The book intends to show the relation between the quality level of governance of regional governements in the noth and south of the country and the level of civic culture in both areas.
While doing so, it constitutes a brilliant (but controverted) introduction to operationalisation of some key concepts of political sociology : governance, civic culture, social capital.... |
