Master in Labour sciencesToute l'année6
Holder(s) :  Jean‑François Orianne
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The Seminar of Professional Practices applies exclusively to students studying for the "one-year" masters degree in work sciences. It aims to accompany students in personal research work based on their experience in the field (instead of a placement in a company), and includes the following stages: establishing a case study, gathering information, processing material (coding, analysis, interpretation), writing a report and oral presentation of the results.
Organization :  Depending on the themes dealt with, the classes will be organised either in the form of content-based seminars or in the form of discussions:

22/09 Information session - F. Schoenaers - J.-F. Orianne
06/10 Observation and description of work situations - J. Colemans - J.-F. Orianne
20/10 Interview techniques - R. Brahy - J.-F. Orianne

03/11 Treatment and coding of qualitative data - C. Lejeune (to be confirmed)
17/11 Analysis of quantitative data - S. Fontaine
10/02 Theorization and problematization - J.-F. Orianne
13/03 Guidelines for the oral presentation of research results - J. Pieters
24/03 Guidelines for report writing - J.F. Orianne
21/04 Presentation of the results - J.F. Orianne
28/04 Presentation of the results - J.F. Orianne
Written notes :  In terms of didactic support, students will rely mainly on a portfolio of work documents put together during the sessions. They may also use the reference manual of R. Quivy and L. Van Campenhoudt, "Manuel de recherche en sciences socials" (Dunod, 2006), which the teacher highly recommends they read.
Assessment :  The assessment of the students' work will be based on an individual oral presentation of a case study based on their professional experience as well as on the written report. The report should not exceed 15 pages (appendices not included, font 12, single line spacing).
It must be handed in to the tutor by 15th May at the latest.

The following points will be taken into account in the assessment of the individual piece of research:
1) the quality of the description of the framework of activities (regulatory measures, legal and/or administrative data, organisation charts, etc.);
2) the quality of the description of the model or activities under observation;
3) the quality of the methodological approach;
4) the quality of the theoretical perspective of the work (dealing with problems, formulation of questions and work hypotheses, etc.).
5) the relevance, coherence and originality of the proposed analysis.

Remarks :  If the course report is not handed in before the set deadline, it will be assessed during the second session.
To be assessed during the second session, the course report must be handed in to the tutor before 15th August at the latest. In case of a negative assessment in the first session, the placement report must be completed, amended, and corrected according to the comments made by the tutor.

Students with no professional practice must go on a long-term placement in order to be able to take part in the seminar.

This placement will be placed under the responsibility of a tutor from the institute as well as under the responsibility of M. Orianne for assessment of the seminar.

A placement agreement stipulating the exact conditions for the assessment and the placement must be agreed between the student, the ISHS tutor and a manager from the place where the placement will take place before it begins.
