| Course contents : | This seminar course is divided into two parts: 1) an introduction to the theoretical and methodological tools of the sociology of professions; 2) presentation of case studies.
The first part consists of interactive presentation and discussion, based on articles, major schools of thought, or paradigms of the sociology of professions: the functionalist approach, interactionist approach, new theories of professions (neo-Marxist and neo-Weberian approaches).Three general topics are the core of this theoretical and methodological reflection on the dynamics of professional groups: professional legitimacy, professional autonomy, and competition between professions.
The second part is given to the presentation of various case studies: medical professions, artistic professions, legal professions. We expect to welcome lecturers from outside the class (researchers, teachers, working professionals) to enrich this empirical part of the course by the discussion of monographs and through discussions of experiences in various professions. |
 |

Dubar and P. Tripier, Sociologie des professions (Armand Colin, 1998), and reading this book is highly recommended by the teacher. |
 |
| Assessment : | The student may choose to write a report on a personal interest (such as a critical review of the literature concerning a professional group or a profession), or may take an oral examination based on the work of the course. |
