Course contents :  - Presentation and illustration of the main research trends in the field of sociology of social movements
- Presentation and illustration of contemporary movements and organisations linked to the theme of globalisation.
Course objective :  General introduction to the field of sociology.
Knowledge of and critical approach to the main schools of thought and key authors.
Introduction to the problems of globalisation through social movements and civic organisations relating to it.

Organization :  Lectures and routine Q&A sessions (15 minutes at the start of each session).
Presentations from researchers, assistants or invited experts either to revise work or to present the particular elements of the second part of the course dedicated to movements and organisations relating to globalisation.
Written notes :  Reference book to be purchased for the first part of the course: E. Neveu, Sociologie des mouvements sociaux. Editions La Découverte, collection Repères, Paris, 4e édition, 2005
Reference book for the second part of the course (students are not required to buy this): Manuel Castells, Le pouvoir de l'identité. Editions Fayard, Paris, 1999.
Portfolio of reading for the year to be purchased.
Assessment :  Written, essay-style examination in the first session.
Oral examination in the second session.
