Course contents :  Introduction, historical remainder, perspectives; syndromic diversity; partial specificity.
Individual differences and exceptional cases.
Development and functioning in children with mental handicap (prelinguistic stage, semantic development, morphosyntacti development, pragmatic and discourse).
Interactions between mentally retarded children and adults; critical periods for language development.

Language intervention with children, adolescents, adults , and ageing persons with mental retardation.
Course objective :  Supply the student with the important information regarding language development and functioning in persons with a mental handicap.
Define and analyse the principles and conditions for efficient language intervention with children ,adolescents, adults, and ageing persons with mental retardation.
Prerequisites :  PSYC0016 Language psychology
Organization :  Seminar; directed work; individual presentations; group discussion.
Written notes :  The list of books and articles is available from the department secretary.
Assessment :  Based on participation in the seminar; a written paper submitted at the end of the seminar and dealing with a selected topic of the course; a written exam in session(s).
