Holder(s) :  Philippe Ghosez, Jean‑Yves Raty
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Starting from the basic concepts of electronic and phonon band structures, the course will describe the properties of the main classes of materials (metals, semiconductors, insulators) in different shapes (bulk cristals, nanostructures, amorphous state). The emphasis will be placed on the description of some specific properties (transport, magnetic, optic, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, superconductor) and their use in some paractical applications : electronic devices (diodes, transistors), data storage, magnets, sensors, actuators, screens, ...
Course objective :  The goal of this course is to initiate the students to the microscopic aspects of the physics of materials and to describe the mechanisms exploited in various modern devices.
Prerequisites :  Basic concepts in cristallography, quantum mechanics and statistical physics.
Workshops :  Informations concerning the labs will be provided in the beginning of the semester.
Organization :  The oral course will content 15 modules of 2 hours and will be completed by exercises (5x 2 hours) and laboratories (10h).
Written notes :  Notes will be distributed to the students.
Assessment :  Oral examination after a written preparation.
