| Course contents : | In this course we will deal with the following chapters : a)electricity, also included electromagnetism and b) modern physics. Here are the main topics that will be developed : 1. Electricity : electrostatics, electric current, electromagnetism (magnetic field, its sources, electromagnetic induction, alternating current) 2. Modern physics : quantum physics, atomic physics, relativistic physics 3. Celestial mechanics |
| Course objective : | This course deals with a part of physics. As for the other part, it aims at giving students some knowledge of the fundamental laws that govern physical phenomena as well as physical procedures used in the industry. This course constitutes a prerequisite for the advanced applied sciences courses. |

| Prerequisites : | ... |
| Workshops : | - Practical seances are organised with the support of teacher-assistant. |
| Organization : | Multimedia presentation supported by an excellent reference textbook (see basic bibliography) which is adopted to teaching basic science to business engineers. A power point application will cover all the course and a syllabus with the copy of the transparencies will be available. The powerpoint application will be completed with numerous animations replacing lab experiments. As far as possible a real-life experiment will be presented in class. Many exercises and concept applications will be detailed during the course. |
| Written notes : | - Harris BENSON, "Electricité et électromagnétisme", (de Boeck-Université). - Harris BENSON, "Physique Moderne", (de Boeck-Université). - CD-ROM : Physique interactive (Studi). - CD-ROM : Physique animée (UCL 1996, 1999). - CD-ROM : Physique par l'expérience. |
| Assessment : | 1st session assessment : a written examination with questions covering the whole course. It will tackle the theory a s well as the underlying applications. Students may ask to take an oral examination. 2nd session assessment : idem prolonged 2nd session assessment : idem |
