PHYS0058-1  Interactions between radiation and matter
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in physics, 3rd year6
Holder(s) :  Joseph Cugnon
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Two aspects of the interactions of radiations with matter are discussed:
1. Quantum aspects of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter: quantization of the electromagnetic field, photon, quantum description of elementary processes, comparison with classical approach, coherence of electromagnetic radiation, associated effects, laser, properties of laser light.
2. Interaction ionizing radiation with matter: basic phenomena in the interaction of charge particle radiation with ordinary matter, slowing-down of particles, effects to materials, application to detectors, implications on telecommunications and space missions.
Course objective :  Initiation to the basic principles govering the interaction of electromagnetic waves and of ionizing radiations with matter. In the first case, the emphasis will be put on the quantum aspects and on their technological applications. In the second case, more attention will be payed to the consequences for properties of materials.
Prerequisites :  Basic Quantum Mechanics course.
Workshops :  Exercises aiming at determining and illustrating the implications of the basic principles governing the structure of the microscopic world and the order of magnitude of physical quantities. Visits of local research laboratories, according availabilities.
Organization :  2d quadrimester. See official schedule.
Written notes :  Lecture notes are available (free of charge) to the students.
Assessment :  The work done by the students during the exercise sessions is evaluated. An oral examination, bearing both on the theory and on the exercises is organized during the scheduled examination sessions.
