| Course contents : | Introduction to the physics of microscopic sytems: 1. At the atomic scale: Simple atoms and molecules simples. Origins of the of the stability of atoms and of molecular bounds. 2. At supra-atomic and mesoscopic scales. Binding of molecules: aggregates, macromolecules, polymers, fullerenes, etc. 3. At the subatomic scale. Nuclei and nuclear forces. Structure of nuclei. Radioactivity and radioprotection. Nuclear energy. |
| Course objective : | Initiation to the basic principles for the description of the structure of subatomic (nuclear), atomic et mesoscopic systems, and of their properties. Relation with most important technologic and scientific applications. |
| Prerequisites : | Basic Quantum Mechanics course. |
| Workshops : | Exercises aiming at determining and illustrating the implications of the basic principles governing the structure of the microscopic world and the order of magnitude of physical quantities. Visits of local research laboratories, according availabilities. |
| Organization : | 2d quatrimester. See schedule. |
| Written notes : | Lecture notes are available (free of charge) to the students. |
| Assessment : | The work done by the students during the exercise sessions is evaluated. An oral examination, bearing both on the theory and on the exercises is organized during the scheduled examination sessions. |
