Course contents :  The design process.

Functionality : dimensional tolerances, geometric tolerances, hyperstaticity as related to geometric tolerances, roughness, stiffness exigencies, friction and its consequences, design for assembly and disassembly, reciprocal dependency between shapes and the fabrication process.

Liability : forces determination, preliminary plan of a shaft, general principles of liability, mechanical tests of materials, principles of the strength limit determination, hertzian contacts, rolling bearing computation.
Course objective :  Learning the general rules of mechanical design.
Prerequisites :  Rational mechanics, elements of strength of materials.
Workshops :  Exercises illustrating the course.
Organization :  4-hours units, each friday morning, 2d quadrimester.

Assessment :  Open book oral exam.
