MECA0053-2  Geophysical fluid dynamics (part 2)
Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in physics, 3rd yearPremier quadrimestre3
Holder(s) :  Jean‑Marie Beckers
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Summary of part I, shallow water theory, waves in shallow waters, tides, two layer models, baroclinic modes, quasi-geostrophic approximation, baroclinic instability, reduced gravity model, uwpellings, equatorial waves and El Nino, internal wave guide, Sverdrup theory of the general circulation, salt fingering
Course objective :  Continuation of part I with emphasizis on oceanographic processes. The lecture aims at dynamically explaining observed processes as El Nino, cyclogenesis, wave propagations.
Prerequisites :  Geophysical fluid dynamics partim I
Workshops :  A project has to be realised in groups of two students on a particular process. The project includes process analysing, understanding and simulation (e.g. from hydrographic data calculate geostrophic velocities).
Organization :  The two hours /week are used for theory lectures and discussions on the projects.

If the schedule allows it, lectures will be given the first quadrimester on Thursdays 14:00-16:00 or Fridays 10:00-12:00
Written notes :  Lecture notes are available
