MECA0015-1  Hydraulic Machines
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in electromechanics, 3rd year5
Holder(s) :  Olivier Léonard
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :
  • Historical perspectives, basic equations and principles.
  • Pumps: hydraulic, manometric and theoretical heights, losses, energetic balances, caracteristic curves, centrifigal and axial machines, number of blades, axial and radial thrusts, flow in stationary parts, similarity laws, trimming, interaction of a pump and a system, regulation.
  • Turbines: energetic balances, Francis, Pelton, Kaplan and bulb turbines, caracteristic curves, similarity laws, regulation, wind turbines.
  • Cavitation.
  • Positive displacement machines.
Course objective :  To understand how the hydraulic machines work, how they are sized and how they can be used in relation to their environment.
Prerequisites :  Hydraulics and fluid mechanics.
Workshops :  Two laboratory sessions (2 hours each) are organized, devoted to the test of a centrifugal pump and a positive-displacement pump, the test of a Pelton turbine, the acquisition and analysis of pressure, flow, torque measurements, and the assessment of the
performances of the machines.
Organization :  This course is organized throughout the second half of the academic year, by 4 hour sessions, at a rate of about 35 hours of theory and 15 hours of exercises.
Written notes :  Course notes are available, as well as a collection of solved exercises. These notes are regularly updated and are distributed during the course.
Assessment :  An oral examination on the theory and a written examination on the exercises are organized in June (1st session) and September (2nd session).
