MECA0014-3  Introduction to Hydraulic machines and Compressors
Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation (Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation), 3rd yearPremier quadrimestre3
Holder(s) :  Olivier Léonard
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :
  • Historical perspectives, basic equations and principles.
  • Pumps: hydraulic, manometric and theoretical heights, losses, energetic balances, caracteristic curves, centrifigal and axial machines, similarity laws, interaction of a pump and a system, regulation.
  • Cavitation.
  • Positive displacement machines.
  • Introduction to volumetric, centrifugal and axial compressors.
Course objective :  To understand how the pump work and how they can be used in relation to their
environment.
Prerequisites :  Hydraulics and fluid mechanics.
Workshops :  A laboratory session (2 hours) is organized, devoted to the test of a centrifugal pump and a positive-displacement pump, the acquisition and analysis of pressure, flow, torque measurements, and the assessment of the performances of the machines.
Organization :  This course is organized during the first half of the academic year, by sessions of 2 hours each.
Written notes :  Course notes are available, as well as a collection of solved exercises. These notes are regularly updated and are distributed during the course.
Assessment :  An oral examination on the theory and a written examination on the exercises are organized in January (1st session) and September (2nd session).
