Master in French and Romance Languages and Literatures : French as a Second Language, Professional focus, 1st year4
Holder(s) :  Danièle Latin

Course contents :  This course (30 hours) will take place during the second four-month period, as of February 2009, in room 4/9 of the Department of Romance Languages and Literature, on Mondays, from 12:00 to 14:00. For this academic year, it will be designed as an introduction to African literature and cultures.

It focuses mainly on the problems and looks at a certain number of issues relating to the positioning of African literature written in French, from countries south of the Sahara. However, the course does not exclude the possibility of exploring literature from the French West Indies and Haiti. On the other hand, the course will not directly deal with North African literature.

The theme running through the course will be: black Africa and French-speaking literature

The following issues will be dealt with:

First part (a) General Introduction:

- Outline of the historical and sociolinguistic situations of the French-speaking world of the South

- French in black Africa: language and literature problems

- Second part: emerging African literature

- The unifying movement of negritude

- The works of Léopold Sédar Senghor, Aimé Césaire and Léon Gontran Damas

- African and French-speaking literary critique

A third part (c) includes an introduction to the study of the African novel and literary modernity
Course objective :  The aim of the course is to initiate participants in the literary expression of African cultures (and more broadly from the South) in the French language and in the sociological processes that govern the forms of legitimation of a type of literature in the position of postcolonial-type cultural domination.
Prerequisites :  To make the most of this course, students must have a good general knowledge of the history of 20th century French literature. Class attendance is compulsory.
Workshops :  In-depth reading of the poems of Léopold Sédar Senghor.
Reading and report on a novel (according to list)
Organization :  Second four-month period (starting in February 2009)
See http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires
Written notes :  Students will be offered a syllabus providing a chronology and critical elements as well as a choice of texts. They will have to acquire a modern novel themselves, which they have chosen from a selective list proposed to them.
