Course contents :  1. Methodological introduction: basic discourse analysis, theory of social discourse, social criticism of literary texts.

2. Historical introduction: Topical foundations of French universalism, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.

3. The myth of French universalism: strong periods (Rivarol, Discours sur l'universalité de la langue française) and critical periods (XXth century).

4. Francophone responses to the myth: Belgian (Michaux), Swiss (Ramuz), Quebecois (Miron).
