Course contents :  The literature of two centuries will be presented through its main emphases and schools, and through its main authors. This literature will be placed in relation to the circumstances of its creation: a society, a history, an institution. A more extensive and methodical analysis will be given to the period extending from 1848 to 1960. Class work: as the class progresses, students will be required to read several significant works from the period 1848-1960.
Course objective :  To familiarise students with the major literary movements which characterised the aesthetic and intellectual world of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Written notes :  Reference book : Nicole Warusfel, Fernand Egéa, Dominique Rincé, Olivier God, Bernard Valette, Histoire de la littérature française, XIXe et XXe siècles, Paris, Nathan, coll. H. Miterrand, 1993; 9 novels which are compulsory reading + 2 books to be chosen from a closed list.
Assessment :  Written + oral examination. In June.
