| Course contents : | This course bears upon the prose work of Jean Genet. Its objective will be to stage a socio-critical reading of the "scandale Genet": recognized as a major work of the 20th century, Genet's oeuvre is also one of the most polemic; thought to be subversive, it appears to be focused on an obsession with death and the exploration of evil. The purpose of the course is to attempt to understand the meaning of the scandal, to discern the means set in motion by the author to accomplish it, and particularly to grasp the vision of the world from which Genet's writing proceeds. In order to do this we will use the methods of socio-critical theory, which aims at exposing the way the literary text is centrally inscribed in a social context, by using all the means provided by literary theory. |
