Holder(s) :  Michel Kefer
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  1. Relationship beween language and thought; between literal meaning and meaning in context.
2. Ambiguity and vagueness.
3. Analytical implication and presupposition.
4. Lexical semantics: different types of lexical units, semantic valence, semantic features, prototypes.
5. Introduction to sentence semantics (in particular in relation with syntax) and to formal semantics.
Course objective :  Knowledge of the basic notions of modern semantics.
Prerequisites :  In principle none. However, the course requires an analytic mind. It constitutes a normal continuation of a course in general linguistics and is a good preparation for students who intend to write a memoir in a domain requiring a semantic analysis.
Workshops :  To be determined in class.
Organization :  30 hours;
2nd semester;
See http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires
Written notes :  Lecture notes for part of the course. Chapters of various books will have to be read in the library.
Assessment :  Written examination (as a rule, the aim of the questions is to check the student's understanding and ability to apply).
