Course contents :  The Genres of American Popular Culture

This seminar will be organized around a series of sessions centered on specific genres across selected popular media, including literature, film and television. The class will highlight their importance in the cultural history of the United States and reveal their explicit and implicit meanings with the help of critical essays by prominent critical theorists such as Fredric Jameson, Umberto Eco, Laura Mulvey, Jean Baudrillard, and Greil Marcus. Topics and works will include science fiction, the hardboiled thriller, romance fiction, comics, popular music, comedy, TV sitcoms, Star Trek, Philip K. Dick, Madonna, Twin Peaks and Desperate Housewives.
